DAFFODIL PLANTING

dafoo1

Saturday 8th October 2005, a day to be remembered in the village of Canonbie. The youth of Canonbie clubbed together in raising funds to purchase 24,000 daffodil bulbs, through a number of under 18s discos. The project was aimed at symbolically linking Canonbie and Rowanburn as well as allowing the community to work together and produce what should be a delightful spring flowering.

On Saturday morning, around 7 oclock Canonbie Youth Group were out at work, ensuring everything was in place for what hoped to be a successful day. The first planters arrived at Canonbie School at 9 oclock. The Youth Group had previously advertised the day and invited the community to plant up to 100 bulbs in memory of a loved one. Each planter was assigned a plot number, which covered a 50 metre stretch over the 1 mile distance.

As 10 oclock drew closer, the tractor with the bulbs had delivered to all the plots and more and more villagers arrived. Canonbie Youth Group are staggered at the support this project had. By 12.30pm, 22500 daffodil bulbs were in the ground. This is all thanks to the community of Canonbie, we are all proud of you. The spirit, determination and clubbing together attitude from everyone was remarkable and we all never dreamt of being finished by 12.30pm, it is just great to see the community working together once in a while. Marie Curie Cancer Care was also involved in the project and will be supplying road signs for the spring flowering and all funds raised from the teas, coffees etc will be donated to the charity.

We, Canonbie Youth Group have a lot of people to thank. Peter Hannah, for supplying and working on the tractor, The WRI for supplying teas, coffees, biscuits etc, Roland Smith for supplying a plaque for the project, Marie Curie Cancer Care for supporting the project, Jock Millar on behalf of the police for supplying safety signs and any other helpers who we have missed you know who you are and of course the community in the Parish of Canonbie the spirit and fight in this village is something different.

Thank you all.
